HERI – Research Actions Database

Welcome to the HERI Research Actions Database. The database provides details of past and present research actions related to all aspects of hydropower. The database has been structured following the categorisation developed for the HYDROPOWER EUROPE research and innovation agenda, and Strategic Industry Roadmap.

The database contents have been collated from a variety of organisations working on research actions across all sectors of the hydropower industry. The information has been share freely and is available as open access. You can search the database or add details of new initiatives to the database via the buttons below.

Development of an environment for integrating physics-based and data-based models for dam monitoring

Description

The NUMA project developed an integrated computational platform for dam safety management by combining physics-based numerical models with data-driven models derived from dam monitoring and auscultation data. Traditionally, these two approaches have been applied independently, which can lead to inconsistent interpretations of dam behaviour and complicate safety-related decision-making. NUMA aimed to overcome this limitation by creating a framework that integrates both modelling approaches, enabling improved calibration of numerical models, more reliable prediction of dam behaviour, earlier application of statistical models, and enhanced assessment of structural safety. The project also developed methodologies for the dynamic adjustment of safety thresholds and improved interpretation of monitoring data to support more effective dam surveillance, risk assessment, and maintenance strategies.
